There is a new breed of young surfer that just “rides them all”.
They don’t restrict their surfing to one particular form or style of board, but take a multi faceted approach using different craft to ride different waves, and they have no difficulty shifting from one style to the other.
Seventeen year old Keahi de Aboitiz is a second generation surfer from Noosa making a name for himself in Kite Surfing, Kite boarding and Stand Up Paddle Surfing.
His approach is refreshing. He is carving out new lines on waves and is equally at home on short and longboards.
Only on Maui will you find larger than life HD projected films on a grassy knoll under the stars. Yes, the Maui Film Festival is back and it would not be complete without a couple surf films. On Thursday, June 17 at the Celestial Cinema famed director Taylor Steele will present Castles in the Sky. Using Google Earth to scout out the locations of Iceland, Vietnam, Africa, Peru, and India, this film is as much about the journey as it is about surfing. A tribute to Taylor Steele will precede the film. On Friday, Hana Surf Girls depicts life in East Maui for two girls trying to make their mark in the surf world. 8pm at the Castle Theater.
On May 16, 2010, The New York Times featured the Paia art scene “Where Wetsuits and Art Meet in Maui.” Despite the misinformed headline (really, who wears wetsuits in Maui?), it was cool to see our little beach town of Paia get some recognition. “Hanging Loose” the painting shown here by Avi Kiriaty, is one of the artists mentioned in the piece.
Keahi de Aboitiz headed home from Hawaii with a new custom SUP board in tow just in time for Noosa Festival of Surfing which ran from March 14-21. In the final heat, he caught air and landed in 2nd place overall. For more pictures and news, follow Keahi’s blog.
After a long week of meetings in Maui, Pete and Keahi escape to the Big Island for some SUP and kiting. The gorgeous Kona Village Resort thoughtfully hosted them along with Pete’s family – wife Lisa and daughter Tahiti. Look out for the complete photo story with travel notes from Pete in upcoming media. Photo: Stephen Whitesell
Patrik Johansson sent this photo in to Maui from Sweden and he notes “As you can see, conditions are a bit different here at the moment.” Photo: Gustav Hallen.
